Child Dedication

Please complete this form if you would like to be notified when we have our next child dedication.

We are looking forward to a partnership with you, the parent(s), as we work together to help your child know, show, and grow in God’s love! At Eaglemont Christian Church (ECC), child dedication celebrates the parents’ commitment to raising their child in a faith-filled home. Both the church and the parents make a declaration to spiritually nurture the child and then a blessing is prayed for the little one and his or her family.

Can We Have Our Infant Baptized?

In the New Testament, we consistently see that water baptism only happens after someone makes a personal commitment of their life to Jesus and expresses their trust in Him as the forgiver of their sin and leader of their life. We do not practice what the New Testament does not provide us an example for; therefore, we practice child dedication.

In the New Testament, we see that Mary and Joseph “presented [Jesus] to the Lord” (Luke 2:22) at the temple in Jerusalem.

In the Old Testament (I Samuel 1:27-28), after praying for a son, Hannah dedicated Samuel to the Lord. She declares: “I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life, he will be given over to the Lord.”

Child dedication acknowledges the important role of the parent(s) and the church in raising children so that they can one day make the decision to follow Jesus, thus receiving salvation, on their own. We believe that God offers grace to children who have not yet reached the “age of accountability’’- meaning that before a child reaches this age of understanding, they are not accountable for their sins and will enter heaven.

What Does the Dedication Process Look Like?

Child dedication opportunities are made available at various times throughout the year. On the day of your child’s dedication, the pastor will meet with you in the church office at 9:45 a.m. to let you know when in the gathering the dedication will take place.

Our pastor will call your family forward and introduce you to the congregation. We encourage you to invite family and friends, take pictures, and involve your other children in the gathering. After sharing some comments, our pastor will then ask you a couple of questions, typically:

1. Do you now publicly dedicate [your child’s name] to God, and in doing so, also commit to providing a model of consistent Christian living for him/her to follow?

2. Do you commit to raising [your child’s name] with God’s wisdom and direction, and to model to him/her by your own commitment to make gathering with other Christ-followers for mutual strength and support a priority?

The pastor will ask the congregation for a commitment to pray for the family today and be supportive of families like them in helping them grow in their relationship with Jesus.

A Christian Parent’s Responsibility:

God makes it clear that His desire is for parents to ensure that their lives, and that of their children, are rooted and grounded in God’s word. Child dedication is an opportunity for parents to publicly declare their commitment to this important responsibility and high calling.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

(Deuteronomy 6:5-9)

The task of raising children in the ways of God can feel like a daunting task. At Eaglemont Church, we are committed to walk with you in this journey and provide encouragement, prayer, resources, as well as any support you feel you may need at any point.

We also host “Faith@Home” events where we talk about relevant ways you can live out your faith at home.
